Rhode Island Red

Rhode Island Red- Non Industrial Chicken

The Rhode Island Red is one of the most popular breeds there is, being that they are hardy birds and great for both meat and eggs. Rhode Island Reds are bred for their single comb or rose comb.  The single combed variety was admitted to the American Poultry Association’s Standard of Perfection in 1904.

We raise the Single Comb Rhode Island Red. They have a deep mahogany color plumage, compared to the production Rhode Island Reds, which were selectively bred for increased production, which also lightened their plumage. The  “old-type” Rhode Island Reds are getting rarer and few. According to the Livestock Conservancy, the non industrial Rhode Island Red chickens are on the watch list.
